CREATIVE STATEMENT
My interest in patterns began as a young girl spending time at my grandmother’s house, enchanted by her stacks of fabrics with their colorful prints collected over decades, staring at illustrations of beautiful garments rendered in her old sewing patterns, and mesmerized by the repeating swirls and flourishes of wallpapers in her home and in other old places I would visit, which would all capture my imagination — especially as these coverings began to be torn away in favor of solid paint, becoming another lost remnant of the past. I loved thinking about how all these things held some element of the hand, made during a time before computers, and how that made me feel connected to them even more: there was this inspirational feeling that anything was possible to create, even the most complex seamless patterns. I use many digital tools in my work today, but I hope to always maintain some connection to the hand and its many perfect imperfections.

Q&A
What industry do you most enjoy creating patterns for?
Currently I'm really interested in creating designs for wallpaper (it's so amazing to see how color and print can transform a physical space), but I also love seeing patterns come alive on home decor and paper goods: something accessible for everyone!
Where do you find inspiration?
Prints on vintage clothing and fabrics, historic wallpapers, old books about art, craft and design (and new books about old art, craft and design), vintage magazines and catalogs, colorful ephemera of the past found in thrift stores and antique malls, architecture here in Chicago and while traveling, flow and feeling in music.
What would be your dream pattern job?
Creative freedom to work on wallpaper designs, or a collaboration with a sustainably-minded fashion designer or company who shares a similar passion for vintage style and design as I do, putting together a full collection of vibrant prints based on this shared inspiration.
