CREATIVE STATEMENT
My interest in animals and wildlife illustration began through volunteering for a wildlife charity. My expertise has developed from a career in conservation communication. I nurture this focus by spending time in nature and as a member of an ornithological society. What I love most about illustration is its ability to connect with people and act as a catalyst to change human behaviour. To create a successful animal illustration it’s important to find out things that will captivate people. I try to capture the spirit of a species by building in ambient knowledge. To maintain my skillset I’ve recently completed a Masters in Illustration with full distinctions from Falmouth University in the UK, renowned for its illustration programme.

Q&A
What is your favorite animal?
The small copper butterfly. It’s an eye-catching and unmistakable meadow species with a scientific name derived from the Latin, floreo, ‘to flourish’.
What animal is most fun to draw?
I love drawing birds, particularly those I spot daily and know well—from the characteristic movement of a species to its interactions with others.
Which do you prefer—cats or dogs?
I’ve grown up with both cats and dogs but I have a particularly soft spot for my labradoodle, Rosie.
