CREATIVE STATEMENT

My interest in animals and wildlife began when I was a kid. I have always loved animals and nature and when I was in high school I worked at a veterinarian's office. We mostly serviced cats and dogs but once in a while we would have a seagull or other wild animal come in for help. Over the years, my expertise in drawing animals has developed due to my many animal and nature-based art products and collections I have created for a variety of clients. I nurture this focus by exploring nature and drawing in my sketchbook daily. What I love most about wildlife illustration is its ability to help me connect to nature. Animals are such a big part of my life. I have a dog, two cats and a flock of chickens! They are so fun, intelligent and like us in many ways but also so different. Being able to share time and space with them makes me happy and bringing them into my art is an absolute joy!
To create a successful wildlife illustration I believe it is important to have an understanding of animal anatomy. For me, the two most important qualities are understanding the personality and the characteristics of the animal that you are drawing. I love spending time with my animals and exploring nature. I keep a sketchbook where I love to draw and doodle animals and wildlife.

Q&A

What animal do you most relate to?
I probably relate most to a cat. I love home and a cozy place to curl up and just be.

What animal is the most fun to draw?
I have drawn so many animals - owls, chickens, llamas, sloths, goats, cats, dogs and many, many more! Each one has its own characteristics that I love. Beautiful expressive eyes and lots of fun fur or feathers is a joy for me to draw.

Which do you prefer: cats or dogs?
This question has swirled around my head since I was a kid and the answer is that I love both! I have a cat and two dogs and I love them all. However, I do believe that my home is not a home without a cat.
