CREATIVE STATEMENT

My interest in drawing people began during art school and many figure drawing courses. Over the years, my expertise in illustrating people has developed while working on personal projects such as portraits of my favorite female artists through history. The aspect I love most about portrait illustration is its ability to connect viewers deeply to the characters I create. For me, the two most important qualities of a successful portrait illustration are capturing emotion and creating an image that transports the viewer into the work. I want my illustrations to showcase diversity, people of color, marginalized communities, and celebrate bodies of all sizes and abilities.

Q&A

Which of your portraits is a personal favorite?
My favorite portrait is of a young woman wearing a shirt that proclaims, “Educate, Liberate, Defy Hate.”  I love the message of education as a superpower to overcome hate.

What is the most important feature to capture?
I’m pleased with an illustration that captures a quiet strength or peace.

What would your dream project be?
A mindful, hygge, nature-inspired lifestyle book featuring women of all different ages, sizes, and ethnicities. With peaceful illustrations of them gardening, creating, and connecting in their communities.
