CREATIVE STATEMENT
Character design is one of my favorite aspects of being a professional illustrator. Ever since I was a child I loved dreaming up and drawing characters, and imagining back stories and side kicks for them. At the start of my career (over 20 years ago) I developed my signature style freelancing for businesses and creating logo characters and mascots. This eventually lead me to illustrate character-driven picture books as well! Although I am mostly known for my expertise in children's books, I truly love developing characters and mascots for small businesses that focus on children and educational publications. I am blessed to have several businesses I have been working with for many years, as they keep coming back to have me draw their characters for different uses. It is important to be able to translate a character’s likeness and personality in multiple poses and situations–and this is probably one the things I love most about character design. Whether it's a logo, mascot, or the star of a picture book, I excel at breathing life and personality into every design.

Q&A
Who are your favorite cartoon characters?
As a kid in the late 70s and 80s I was big fan of the Smurfs and the Flintstones and used to draw them a lot. I remember loving to draw characters from the Secret of Nimh movie. And, I have always loved Snoopy! Presently some of my favorites are Disney’s Rapunzel and Ariel. Oh, and Merida from Brave and Sven from Frozen. I don’t think I can pick just one favorite!!!!
What was your favorite storybook as a child?
My favorite storybooks as a child were the series of Serendipity Books (way back in the early 80s) written by Stephen Cosgrove and illustrated by Robin James. I loved the stories, but I would pour over the illustrations in those books and draw all the whimsical characters from them.
What is your super power?
Infusing my art and characters with personality, emotion and diversity.
