CREATIVE STATEMENT
I began painting pet portraits during the pandemic. It all started when I painted a little doodle of my dog in a colorful, splash of watercolor and shared it on Instagram. I soon received messages from friends and family asking if I could paint their pets. Over the years, my expertise in pet portraits has developed into an art licensing contract for a couple of watercolor patterns in the same style as my paintings. What I love most about painting pet portraits is its ability to connect, surprise, and delight pet parents! I get to truly feel the love and connection we have with our beloved companions.
To create a successful pet illustration I believe it's important to learn everything about that pet's personality. What kind of quirks, silly antics, little habits they have. This information is what brings the painting to life. For me, the two most important qualities of a successful pet illustration are the pet's facial expression, and layers of color to create depth. To maintain my skillset I try to paint everyday—even if it's just a three-minute doodle.
