CREATIVE STATEMENT

Having worked in publishing since my late teens, I have always been fascinated with typography of all kinds, but I also took to hand-lettering even before then, creating signs for my bedroom door, calligraphy greeting cards for friends and family and decorating my exercise books with graffiti and other lettering. More recently, I have delved much deeper into drawing words—making the letters the art in and of itself. And I have found a particular affinity with quirky mixing and matching of fonts, textures and colour to create engaging and eclectic titles and headings. What I love most about hand lettering is the relatability and connection it creates with ordinary people. The shopping list or journal entry of an ordinary person can be just as visually compelling as the most elaborate or intricate piece of letter-press or calligraphy. A successful lettering piece needs to take into account the end use, while being easily legible and also giving joy and comfort. To maintain my skillset I hand letter (digitally and analogue) every day, including creating hand-lettered headings and title pieces for my Substack articles.

Q&A

What is your favorite letter in the alphabet?
My favourite letter, today, is A, because there are so many different ways you can draw it. But it will probably be a different letter tomorrow—they're all fun!

What is your favorite quote?
“My mind works in idleness. To do nothing is often my most profitable way.”

What writing tool do you use?
I mostly use Adobe Fresco (predominantly pixel brushes for hand lettering, though sometimes vector), though I sketch compositions with a Blackwing pencil and also enjoy analogue hand lettering, with gouache, paint pens, coloured pencils and crayons. I also love to get out my little collection of dip pens and hand letter in scratchy ink.
