CREATIVE STATEMENT

My interest in bird and botanical illustration began in the 1970s while spending my youth roaming the nearby home of John James Audubon and the Pennsylvania Nature Preserves. What I love most about illustrating birds and botanicals is the ability to connect with nature. I hope my illustrations will inspire today’s youth to go outside and explore their surroundings while developing an interest in nature. Over the years, I have spent many hours studying with expert artists and allocating large amounts of time outdoors to observe natural habitats. For me, creating successful bird or botanical illustrations requires studying many photographs and species in real life. It is important to achieve color accuracy and capture details that provide each illustration with its own individual personality.

Q&A

What animal do you most relate to?
I think I have a lot in common with owls. I’m very observant and like to stay up late working.

What animal is the most fun to draw?
I have fun drawing chickens and turkeys. I love studying their funny expressions and illustrating their feather patterns.

Which do you prefer: cats or dogs?
Dogs and cats are both are great, but I love bunny rabbits and have them as pets.
