CREATIVE STATEMENT

I specialize in floral pattern design driven by colors. I begin each floral pattern by building a color palette with interesting contrast. I’m inspired by old-world folk art and by the maximalist surface decoration of past eras, particularly Renaissance Italy, and the later 70s. I currently create my my work digitally, but keep a paper and ink sketchbook to remind myself to work with mistakes and not get to comfortable with undo features.

Q&A

Which flower do you draw the most?
I prefer to draw round flowers with lots of petals, daisies, strawflowers, zinnias, chamomile, echinacea, etc.I often make up flowers based on the characteristics of these flowers. I don’t love to draw irises or lilies. They are beautiful and lovely to have around, though!

What grows in your garden?
In our high-ish altitude garden we grow lots of daisies and cornflowers and my favorite to grow—but not favorite to draw—lavender. It really shouldn’t grow well here but it loves the dry, south-facing spot where it’s lived for almost 20 years.

What do flowers symbolize to you?
I would love to think that the strawflower symbolizes me. I don’t have any specific reason for that. I love them. I love that they exist in so many colors and I love that they retain their color and beauty indefinitely.
