CREATIVE STATEMENT
I've been a visual storyteller all my life: first in theater, then in advertising, and now as an illustrator. My 20 years as a creative director in advertising were a masterclass in ideation and collaboration on tight deadlines, and my love of creative problem solving has carried right into my work as an illustrator. Nothing energizes me like figuring out how to beautifully communicate an idea or tell a story in a unique way through imagery. The best editorial illustrations don't simply visualize the concept, but also add another dimension to the way readers can connect with it.
Q&A
Which publication does a great job at using illustrations?
Oyla is a favorite of mine, as well as Nautilus and Frankie.
What topic do you most enjoy illustrating about?
I love anything strange or magical, and I'm fascinated by human history and the migration of people and ideas over time. I'm in love with California in a Joan-Didion-in-an-orange-grove sort of way, and I delight in the joy and absurdity of motherhood (as a person and an artist). I also find it very satisfying to make complex or high-level ideas accessible with just the right visual.
What magazine cover do you want your illustration to be on?
I dream of The New Yorker or Wired, of course, but I'd love to be featured on the cover of a publication that doesn't usually use illustration that way. I think we're all craving a little more humanity in our various media, and it would be cool to surprise an audience like that.
