CREATIVE STATEMENT

My interest in children’s illustration began in early childhood when I was entranced by all the picture books my librarian mother read to me. After graduating from the illustration department at RISD, I moved to NYC where I work as an illustrator in a colorful painterly style that appeals to both children and adults. To create a successful children’s illustration I develop expressive children and animal characters that come to life off the page. What I love most about picture books is their ability to nurture children’s imaginations and to help inform their social-emotional understanding of the world.

    Q&A

What was your favorite storybook as a child?
I have so many, but a classic one was Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown. The blank spread “goodnight nobody” added an existential twist to it. I also loved the Frances books.

Which authors do you admire most?
I most admire both Maurice Sendak and Lauren Child for their humor, wit, and distinctive voices.

What characteristics really bring a children’s book to life?
Having unique and compelling illustrations is the characteristic that makes picture books come most to life.
