CREATIVE STATEMENT

Rod Hunt is a London, UK based illustrator specializing in brands creating detailed character filled isometric illustrations for advertising, marketing and publishing.

With 30 years experience as an illustrator he's worked for clients worldwide bringing his unique voice and perspective to their brands.
Rod’s illustrations are often very detailed with layers of humour and interest creating complex worlds populated with little characters, scenes and easter eggs. It’s very important for him to entertain the viewer as well as inform giving them something else to see on repeat viewings. Storytelling is an important part of the process.

At the beginning of a commission he wants to fully understand the brief and the aims of the client. It’s important to give himself enough thinking and doodling time at the beginning of a project before producing a detailed rough drawing. Illustrating a great illustration is more than just me adding more detail, the brief need to be distilled down to what’s important, giving it structure and flow throughout the composition to lead the eye on a journey. That’s where the real hard work is done and is the foundation of a great piece of work.

As a child Rod was always drawn to the busy detailed book illustrations by Richard Scarry, isometric computer games from the 1980’s and comics, obviously these childhood visual interests stayed with him. He’s also illustrated many successful Search and Find book series himself including Top Gear's Where’s Stig? and the personalised Where’s Your Dog? books with Yappy.com.

Q&A

What is your favorite logo?
V&A Museum's logo is simple, beautiful and elegant. One of the best.

Which brand do you most admire for its use of illustration?
Beaverton Brewery in the UK have really created a strong image using illustration across their cans and marketing. In your face and unapologetic it sets them apart in a crowded craft beer market.

What packaging would be your dream job?
Beer cans always appeal though I think pizza boxes would be particularly fun and give me a lot of surface area to fill. Let’s create a whole ‘World of Pizza!'
