CREATIVE STATEMENT


As a children’s picture book illustrator, I find illustrations incredibly powerful, conveying more than words alone. A subtle eyebrow raise or a quick glance can create a dynamic and successful picture book illustration. I enjoy adding Easter eggs to my stories, ensuring readers discover something new with each enjoyment. To create a successful children’s picture book, I approach the manuscript with an open mind, inspired by Maurice Sendak’s quote: ‘If you have one style, then you’re going to do the same book over and over…’ Each picture book should have its unique style to match its soul. I collaborate closely with clients to ensure the style aligns with the story. I experiment with digital and traditional styles, taking online courses from industry professionals and completing Curtis Brown’s Writing and Illustrating course for Picture Books. This keeps me focused, engaged, and my work fresh with each manuscript.

Q&A


What was your favorite storybook as a child?
The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me by Roald Dahl was my number one book growing up as a child. I feel this is where my love for illustrating animals started!

Which authors do you admire most?
Maurice Sendak as he wasn’t afraid to tone down his illustration style when he created his internationally acclaimed book—Where the Wild Things are. His monster illustrations raised concerns due to their grotesque appearance, but this soon subsided when the book was understood, and praised.

What characteristic really brings a children’s book to life?
A great picture book needs memorable characters! Plus vibrant, lyrical illustrations with a satisfying ending make up a wonderful picture book.
