CREATIVE STATEMENT

My interest in northern wildlife illustration started in childhood. Before school, I’d already spotted bears, raccoons, foxes, moose, seals, whales, and countless birds—not in zoos, but out in the wild. As an illustrator who specializes in northern animals, I nurture this focus through observing wildlife in nature and my backyard. What I love most about wildlife illustration is its ability to convey messages about ethics, veganism, and sustainability. For me, the two most important qualities of a successful animal illustration are storytelling and subtle humor. To maintain my skillset, I take photos and draw sketches while hiking or camping.

Q&A

What animal do you most relate to?
I feel most like a badger—reckless and resourceful, and full of energy. A bit stubborn, sure, but always ready to dig in and get things done.

What animal is the most fun to draw?
They always look like I LOVE drawing bears. I’ve accidentally given most of them the posture of tired librarians.

Which do you prefer: cats or dogs?
Dogs, definitely—but mostly Bull Terriers. I like a dog who might suddenly decide the walk is over and just sit down, no explanation.
