CREATIVE STATEMENT

I always loved to draw and paint, and I enjoy the artistic challenge that comes with learning new techniques and media. After graduating from college I studied illustration and textile design at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the School of Visual Arts in New York City, and at Rhode Island School of Design.

Beginning with sketches and watercolor paintings, I move to my (usually) trusty technology, and often back again. I spend my days making art inspired by the abundant natural beauty outside my window on the southern Rhode Island coast, and with some combination of my family, friends, dog, and horses. With all of these influences I think of my style as "modern folk art."

    Q&A

What flowers do you draw the most?
I’ve studied Botanical Illustration quite a lot, and I refer to technical specifications whenever I need to, but I always add my own modifications, so most of my flowers look like some kind of hybrid!

    What grows in your garden?
I have a lot of hydrangeas, little roses, and lavender. I have to be careful because the deer on my property eat pretty much everything.

What do flowers symbolize to you?
When I’m painting I really enjoy seeing my subject come to life, so I would say flowers symbolize creativity and freedom, and joy.
