CREATIVE STATEMENT
I always loved to draw and paint, and I enjoy the artistic challenge that comes with learning new techniques and media. After graduating from college I studied illustration and textile design at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the School of Visual Arts in New York City, and at Rhode Island School of Design.
Beginning with sketches and watercolor paintings, I move to my (usually) trusty technology, and often back again. I spend my days making art inspired by the abundant natural beauty outside my window on the southern Rhode Island coast, and with some combination of my family, friends, dog, and horses. With all of these influences I think of my style as "modern folk art."
Q&A
What animals do you most relate to?
I love all animals but birds to me are the most interesting. They just grab my attention first thing in the morning wherever I am, and I notice them all day long. I love their industrious nature and the many calls that each bird has. I have three owl species on my property and it’s fun to listen to them jockey for territory in the fall. The Great Horned Owl always wins!
What animal is the most fun to draw?
This is a tie between birds and fish. As with flowers, I tend to take a bit of liberty, but I try to be as true to the species as I can while having some fun with them!
Which do you prefer, cats or dogs?
Well, no offense to cats, but I’m allergic, so dogs always have a loyal friend in me!
