CREATIVE STATEMENT
My interest in botanical illustration began relatively recently. I’ve always loved hiking and being in nature and have found that drawing and painting different flowers and plants has really added to my love of nature. Growing up in Utah, my love of the mountain wildflowers as well as desert plants and succulents has always been strong. I’ve lived in several places with different flora/fauna including Colorado, Oklahoma, and Utah. Oklahoma with its humidity was something I’d never experienced before and the incredible flowers that could grow there unassisted was amazing. The magnolia trees and Crape Myrtle were my favorite! Colorado and Utah had similar mountain landscapes in places and I loved a slow walk through the mountains in the early summer smelling the pine trees. However, the southwest desert is a place that has always had a piece of my heart with the red rock landscape and gorgeous cacti and blooming desert flowers! What I love most about plants and flowers as inspiration is their ability to endlessly inspire. The unique beauty I find in different plants and flowers never ceases to amaze me! To maintain my skillset I regularly take hikes and walks around my area, collecting native flowers and plants to sketch as well as looking through books of all sorts, from flower arranging to photography books on the national parks.

Q&A
Which flower do you draw the most?
I definitely tend to draw cactus and succulents the most - especially the prickly pear cactus which has the most awesome blooms if you can catch them!
What grows in your garden?
Right now—tomatoes, day lilies, roses, and pompous grasses (all of my plants have to be very drought tolerant since I live in the high desert). The roses are great because they seem to attract some little desert lizards that are very fun to watch!
