CREATIVE STATEMENT

My career as a childrenswear designer in the textile industry has evolved into children’s book illustration. I love to incorporate patterns and nature into my illustrations and use bright colors and whimsical motifs. The opportunity I had to illustrate flowers and nature in the award-winning non-fiction book, Wake, Sleepy One about the California poppy was very exciting and rewarding. It’s important to me to draw characters with empathy and expression. I am always taking classes in children’s illustration to improve my drawing skills.

Q&A

What was your favorite storybook as a child?
My favorite storybook as a child was an English book called Memoirs of a London Doll, published in 1967, written by Richard Henry Horne and illustrated by Margaret Gillies and Richard Shirley Smith. I still have a copy!

Which authors do you admire most?
I love the work of author/illustrator Eric Carle. His work is so original with his combined use of paint and collage.

What characteristic really brings a children’s book to life?
I think the characteristic that most brings a children’s book to life is the personality of the child or animal that is reflected in expressions and movement of the figure.
