Living near the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland, I’ve found such a connection between the restorative energy of nature and mental health. With 20+ years of drawing and painting experience and 10+ of digital media and printmaking experience, I am constantly finding new ways to capture life within these subjects. Whether it is an economy of line or shape in a gesture drawing of a bird or an exploration of color and texture in a vast landscape, a successful illustration in my mind conveys an excitement and meditation of the wonders surrounding us every day.

Do you draw from a model or your imagination?
I always like to use a lot of reference no matter what! I try to pull from photos I’ve taken personally but I find it most beneficial to work from life when I can, especially when trying to convey depth.

What is your favorite activity to illustrate?
Birding and observing the natural world while taking walks or camping has always been a time for my family and I to come together. I like to capture the scene outward so the viewer can place themselves in my perspective, hopefully to encourage them to unplug and reconnect with the outdoors as well.

Where do you find inspiration for new people and poses?
I keep a sketchbook and love to draw as I’m waiting in a restaurant or sitting on my porch. If I draw often, I have plenty of source material that I can compose and work further into later.
