CREATIVE STATEMENT
As an illustrator who specializes in flowers and plants I nurture this focus by observing flora in its natural state and seasonal evolution. I live in the country so far out on a country road that I can't see my neighbors. After twelve years of country living you start to understand what it means to “be close to the land”. My illustrations are inspired by daily life. I enjoy marking time by which flowers welcome us each season: douglas irises in spring, bright orange monkey flowers in summer, hearty dandelions in the fall, and vibrant red toyon berries in winter.

Q&A
Which flower do you draw the most?
I like to draw wildflowers. I come back to Douglas Irises a lot. They are simple, elegant and very sculptural.
What grows in your garden?
My garden is mostly the natural landscape. From my studies at the Rhode Island School of Design I learned to focus on drawing what you really see rather than what you think you see.
What do flowers symbolize to you?
Flowers symbolize to me happiness, hope, rebirth and harmony. Flowers can be a vehicle to transfer the emotion of place, time and scenery into an illustration.
