CREATIVE STATEMENT
My interest in 3d illustration began over 10 years ago. I was and still am a 2d illustrator as well but my interest in 3d illustration really took off with the advancements in 3d software and I was really inspired by the sorts of images that other 3d artists were creating. Over the years, as my expertise in 3d developed I realized that some of the methods, effects and types of images could really only be made in 3d. As an illustrator who specializes in 3d I nurture this focus by staying aware of the technology side of what I do as well as the artistic side. One big thing I love about working in 3d is the flexibility and creative freedom it offers. The ability to make changes almost all the way through the process allows for some pretty interesting discoveries and explorations and the ability to play with lighting and surfaces is unmatched in traditional 2d illustration.
To create a successful 3d illustration I believe it’s important to balance the technical side of things with the right aesthetic. All of the same rules apply creating images in 3d as they do if you were painting on canvas or water-colour on paper. The final outcome in the business of illustration has to serve the client in the best way it can and the technology is really just a tool or a means to an end. For me, the most important qualities of a successful 3d illustration I strive for are creating an image that is not only compelling and hitting it’s mark but also tries to convey something that speaks a bit beyond just the technology and delivers a satisfying impact. To maintain my skillset I follow other inspiring artists, challenge myself and try to keep up with the tech. ;-)

Q&A
Where do you find inspiration?
Listening to music and being out in nature fills my head with many interesting ideas to explore.
What is the oddest thing you ever had to draw?
On a recent 2d project I was asked to recreate an image of a large sabre toothed cat biting into the skull of prehistoric human. It was for an infographic on the roots of the psychology of fear and it was done in a sort of X-ray styled visual treatment.
How do you infuse personality into an illustration?
With 3d, color choices and a distinctive modelling style go a long way to setting a mood or an overall aesthetic.
