CREATIVE STATEMENT

As an illustrator who specializes in character design and visual storytelling for children and young adults I nurture my craft by experimenting with different materials to harness my style. I further my studies through coursework and through on-site observation. What drives my love for illustration are the many stories a single image can carry. To create a successful design, I feel strongly that my job is to capture the fine details and personality of a character within the limits of an image. This means accentuating body language and being thoughtful of what I choose to emphasize.

    Q&A

Who is your favorite cartoon character?
Pippi Longstocking stands as my favorite among the red-headed, strong-willed and independent female characters out there. Her spontaneity and zest for life in Lindgren’s stories translated so seamlessly in the animated series that I grew up watching.

What storybook do you remember from your childhood?
The Strega Nona series, by Tomie de Paola, captured my attention deeply as a child. He combined comics style and two-page spreads throughout his picture books beautifully, and carried a moral story with humor and magic.

    What is your superpower?
I am great at improvising and thinking quickly when push comes to shove. I pride myself on this superpower thanks to my years working in special education. You have to be able to pivot and think outside the box in both art and working with children and teens.
