Q&A

What was your favorite storybook as a child?
My favorite picture book was Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans. I loved her fierce attitude. More importantly, it showed Madeline in the hospital AND showing off her scar. I was a kid who spent a lot of time in a hospital. It was rare for me to find book characters I identified with..

Which authors do you most admire?
It’s tough to narrow down my favorites. I love Kate Messner’s nonfiction, Kristen Larsen’s biographies, and Sophie Blackall’s humor. I’m currently reading Mexikid by Pedro Martin and am really enjoying the story and the art. Each page is overflowing with wonderful, nostalgic details.

What characteristic really brings a children’s book to life?
Emotions really bring a children’s book to life. I think that long after a book has been closed and put away, it’s the emotions that a reader remembers.
