CREATIVE STATEMENT

As an illustrator who specializes in painterly, illustrated portraits, I nurture this focus by keeping a personal sketchbook and painting from life as well as from photos regularly. I approach my illustrated portraits as if I’m sculpting the face with my brush strokes. I strive to capture the energy and likeness of the person as well as convey an emotional liveliness. Over the years, my expertise in illustrated portraits has developed due to really listening to my client’s needs, as well as doing additional research to develop the concept and deepen my understanding of the person whom I’m depicting.

Q&A

Which of your portraits is a personal favorite?
My personal favorite portrait is of Viola Davis because her expression is so engaging, and her blouse is so colorful. Plus I love the sentiment behind the  hand lettering of her quote, “Sit with us and understand…” It’s that statement that excites me most about getting an illustrated portrait assignment — having the opportunity to get to know and understand another person.

What is the most important feature to capture?
The most important feature to capture is where we see the soul — the eyes. With illustration, it's about capturing the glow of light through the pupil. The second most important feature is getting the hairline and overall face shape just right because that's where the likeness is most identified.

What would your dream project be?
My dream project would be to illustrate a cookbook that featured various chefs and their signature dishes. I'd love to paint the portraits, as well as illustrate various food ingredients and cooking or baking supplies. It would be a fun opportunity to combine my three loves: illustrated portraits, food art, and hand lettering.
