CREATIVE STATEMENT
My name is Kamila Wojciechowicz-Krauze, I’m a professional book illustrator. I specialize in children’s book illustrations. My interest in children’s book illustration began quite early. Ever since I was a child, I loved reading books by Beatrix Potter and admired the lovely illustrations within. I had my favorite bedtime stories, beautifully illustrated nursery rhymes, created with a lot of effort and rich colors. Another favorite of mine was Quentin Blake, who illustrated all of Roald Dahl’s books, such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, The Witches, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and many more. As an illustrator who specializes in children’s book illustration, I nurture this focus by continuously sketching whenever I have time. I also collect children’s books by other illustrators and watch animated movies by the Japanese Studio Ghibli. I read books and practice my imagination by walking through the forest and visualizing tiny faeries living in trees. What I love most about children’s book illustrations is its freedom of expression, and letting my imagination run wild, in an age-appropriate manner. I try to create illustrations, which I would enjoy as a child, or my nephews would enjoy. If my nephews are getting excited by the illustration, then it means I succeeded in my task. For me, the two most important qualities of a successful children’s book illustration are consistency, in terms of colour palette, but also character design. If you can create a relatable character (doesn’t have to be perfect), then you will succeed in getting the child’s attention.

Q&A
What is your favorite children’s book of all time?
I have many favorites in terms of children’s books, but there are 3 which I enjoy most of all: Peter Pan, The Tale of Peter Rabbit and The Secret Garden.
Which books would you love to illustrate?
I would very much love to illustrate The Jungle Book, Pinocchio and The Snow Queen. But apart for that, I’m always looking forward to new stories written by authors in the present. Times are changing, and I think it is important to create new fairytales, which are relevant to the world we live in now. This doesn’t mean classic tales should be obsolete—quite the contrary. We should preserve the stories created in the past, but to continue being creative.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I enjoy traveling all over the world, meeting new people, listening to music, and dancing.
