CREATIVE STATEMENT
My interest in children's illustration comes from my love of whimsy, and my attempt to stay in touch with the wonder of childhood even as an adult. Children's books are such a beautiful way to teach, connect with, and learn from kids too—and reading books together is such a special time for parents and their children! I especially enjoy illustrating animals, the natural world, and ideas about imagination, silliness, friendship, and care, because this is the kind of creative, positive, safe world I want to help build. By using a colorful and fun style, I hope to inspire a love of fellow beings and our planet in the next generation!
Q&A
What was your favorite storybook as a child?
Where the Wild Things Are
Which authors do you admire most?
I love Chloe Savage's The Search for the Giant Jellyfish picture book (what gorgeous art and sense of wonder about the sea!), and I think I'll always continue to be a Maurice Sendak fan. I love the way he focuses the story around what being a child feels like, and encourages children to be their own wacky selves.
What characteristic really brings a children’s book to life?
I think a characteristic of authentic openness really makes a children's book jump off the page. The more the book is for the child, the better. I want the experience of reading, learning about the world, and exploring ideas to feel like a fun, warm, inclusive "hooray"!
