CREATIVE STATEMENT

Growing up with two parents who were both teachers, I’ve always had a deep passion for explaining complex ideas in a way that others can easily grasp. This personal mission to achieve clear and accessible communication led me to first pursue a career in graphic design, where I gained expertise in layouts, typography, and information organization. Later, perhaps out of necessity, I developed this illustration style to enhance my ability to convey visual information. By marrying these two disciplines, I aim to bring both clarity and levity to complex topics, and push the medium of infographics to new levels!

Q&A

What topic do you most enjoy illustrating about?
I love doing infographics of things that aren’t specifically technical, the more human side of life that wouldn’t typically be diagrammed. I really enjoy taking visual systems that are normally used for communicating mundane information (owner’s manuals, blueprints, etc) and employing them to comment on subjects that are exciting and interesting.

What has been your most rewarding commission?
I was hired to illustrate all of the infographics for Senator Bernie Sanders’ “Guide to Political Revolution”. Instead of using my usual vector approach, I opted to develop a new style based on the xeroxed/collage punk rock flyers of the 1980s. Not only did I get to help communicate a ton of useful information about income inequality, healthcare reform and global warming, but I was able to develop an additional infographic style in the process. Win-win!

What is the oddest thing you ever had to draw?
It was for an interview with a drag queen and the illustration involved duct tape, let’s just leave it at that.
