CREATIVE STATEMENT

Since I was a young boy playing the very first generation of video games, I’ve been obsessed with the colorful, blocky pixel graphics these games had to employ as a technological limitation. As an illustrator who specializes in coming up with clever, conceptual solutions for my clients, I find this 8-bit approach to be extremely versatile. The visual language of my pixel style has allowed me to interpret a wide range of topics: computer technology, personal relationships, professional sports… even the right age to get a colonoscopy!  I think what I love most about this style is the nostalgia it taps into, which allows me to critically contextualize our contemporary moment–the enjoyable and the horrific–through this comforting visual language.

Q&A

What topic do you most enjoy illustrating about?
I love doing portraits and anything that lets me show off my humorous side. Any subject matter that begs the question “What if this scenario was a video game?” is always a joy for me to tackle. There’s just such a rich, untapped visual language in that space that really didn’t exist prior to the invention of video games.

What magazine cover do you want your illustration to be on?
Everyone says The New Yorker, but honestly I’d love to do the cover of TIME (bonus points if it’s Person of the Year!)
