CREATIVE STATEMENT
What I love most about illustrating children’s book is the ability to connect with the reader. Stories help us learn, feel and imagine. Creating text and art to accompany that is a real joy! I start my art out by hand, painting and collaging. This brings a richness and warmth to what I create. My art is then scanned in, and I continue to layer on details with Photoshop. I love little details, something you might not notice the first time but are delighted to discover down the road.

Q&A
What was your favorite storybook as a child?
I like Richard Scarry books. One of my favorites was The Animals Merry Christmas which is particularly charming! I’d read it year-round.
Which authors do you admire most?
I really liked the Brambly Hedge books by Jill Barklem especially the ones about each season. The books focused on tiny mice in beautifully drawn nature-based settings. I admired how she set the tone for a dreamy enchanted world, plus here name was JILL!
What characteristic really brings a children’s book to life?
I think personality brings a children’s book to life. To me this is done through details that are unique to the illustrator but enjoyed by all. Color, character interaction, or a feeling of excitement when turning the page are all characteristics I strive for and enjoy.
