CREATIVE STATEMENT
I have been drawing since I was a kid, and survived boring church sermons, running errands with my parents, and school through creativity. Drawing things that made people laugh was addictive, and I’ve been drawing to get those reactions ever since. I know I’ve created a successful illustration when I’ve captured a loose, playful energy that is vibrant, warm, and not overworked. Like an effective cartoon, a quality illustration should convey a message quickly, but also with beauty. My disciplines in other areas, including comic writing, painting, pattern design, and digital tool experimentation, contribute to my expanding skillset as an illustrator.

Q&A
What was your favorite storybook as a child?
I was pretty obsessed with Strega Nona by Tomie dePaola. The magical imagery of uncontrollable pasta taking over an Italian village was amazing, and as I write this, I now understand why I have maintained a lifelong fondness for Italian culture, magic and pasta.
Which authors do you admire most?
I tend to admire author/illustrators, and Kyle Beaudette’s work is so sharply hilarious and unapologetically dark. His caption that accompanies an image of a topless woman that reads “Well I farted and threw out my back” does it for me every time. I also love Edward Gorey’s work, Chris Van Dusen, Adam Rex, Kevin Cornell, Mac Barnett, and of course, Dr. Seuss.
What characteristic really brings a children’s book to life?
I feel that lively energy, animated expression and uncensored humanness is at the core of the best books. And for me, it has to have an element of humor that draws the reader in and brings levity to relatable, ridiculous, human problems.
