CREATIVE STATEMENT

My interest in watercolor invitations began when I got married in 2027. I designed my own invitations because I couldn’t quite find something that captured the spirit of my Upstate New York destination wedding. The following year I designed my sister’s wedding invitations. And from there I was hooked. Over the years, my expertise in invitations and event stationery has developed due to my love of illustrating stories. What I love most about watercolor illustration is its ability to capture emotion, express personality, and create non-cookie-cutter details for weddings and other events.

Q&A

What type of event do you most enjoy creating invitations for?
I love creating invitations for weddings the most. It’s truly a chance to illustrate a love story for a couple to their friends and family. The personal details, looking back to traditions that have been around for generations, the opportunity to do something a little extra, it’s all very magical. I love walking my clients through that process.

What was the best party you ever attended?
The most extravagant parties I’ve ever attended in my life have always been associated with corporate and industry events. Whether it was a private happy hour at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter when I worked in marketing at Paramount, dancing with Joey Fatone at Engage! Amelia Island, or attending a private fundraising dinner hosted by Marcus Samelson and VOSS Water when I worked in advertising.

But the best parties for me will always be the less-glamorous occasions I’ve spent with close friends and family. I’ll never forget the summer nights around the fire growing up, or my sister’s intimate wedding at a beachside AirBNB, or laughing at family pool party reunions. Proving that best doesn’t have to be fancy.

What detail makes an invitation extra special?
Personal details will always an invitation extra special. If you can sneak in a private joke, a nod to a family heirloom, or a piece from your story, the invitation will have added meaning for you and your guests. For example, I worked on an invitation recently for a bride where we used her mother’s invitations from 30 years prior as inspiration for some of the details. It was amazing to take cues from the border, the font choices, and the colors to create something entirely new that was still borrowing from the past.

Artwork is an amazing and easy way to get these details in. I always try to create one moment in an invitation suite that works as a standalone art print once the event is over, so guests can frame the piece as a keepsake.
