CREATIVE STATEMENT

My interest in editorial illustration began with a fine art education, followed by 20+ years working in the photo and art departments of magazines like New York, Wired, ReadyMade, and San Francisco Magazine, where I helped commission and shape visual storytelling for a living. Over the years, my expertise developed through my daily relationship with narrative imagery, and understanding what makes a spot illustration or cover work from every angle. As an illustrator specializing in editorial work, I stay deeply engaged with storytelling, mood, and detail in every piece. What I love most about editorial illustration is its ability to distill a complex idea or feeling into a single, resonant image. For me, the two most important qualities of a successful editorial illustration are atmosphere and narrative clarity, ensuring a viewer quickly feels and understands the message. To maintain my skillset, I'm always observing, always drawing, and experimenting with new techniques, while staying loyal to the look of traditional media.

Q&A

Which publication does a great job at using illustrations?
All the publications with New York in the title! (Well, almost all of them!) I think New York Magazine, The New Yorker, The New York Times, and The New York Review of Books have always set the bar for smart, striking editorial illustration. I also love how thoughtfully Zeit Magazine, Frankie, Brutus, and Enthousiasmos commission illustrators, along with more indie publications like Paper Airplane. So many do a great job!

What topic do you most enjoy illustrating about?
I love illustrating images exploring identity and community, capturing the small, human moments that make people feel truly seen, whether that's through still life images or bustling scenes with lots of people.

What magazine cover do you want your illustration to be on?
Again, I come back to those New York publications, as they have all shaped how I think about visual storytelling since the start of my career. But, I'd love to collaborate on any cover! The cover I did for the Gazetteer Summer 2026 issue was such a dream come true. Would love to do more like it!
