HOW TO MAKE YOUR INSTRAGRAM PROFILE MORE PROFESSIONAL

This guide demonstrates how just a few incremental tweaks to your Instagram profile can increase your professional appearance in the eyes of art directors.

Written by Nate Padavick

Instagram now uses the basic tenets of SEO (search engine optimization) to interpret the data on its platform. Spending ten minutes tweaking your Instagram profile will greatly help Instagram—and art directors—understand who you are, what you do, and what you desire. These incremental improvements are super easy.

Your  Photo

Use a professional-looking profile photo with a clean, clear, and simple background.

Your Name

Add a descriptive phrase to your Name field, such as “map illustrator” or “pattern designer” or “portrait artist.”

Your Bio

Include what you do best and what you want to do most. Indicating an affiliation to a professional organization, like @illustratorsforhire, greatly increases your credibility within your industry.

Your Links

Instead of using Linktree or Biosite, make the most of the links that Instagram provides you. Those links should drive traffic to your website or shop.

Your Email

Activate the Email button so clients can contact you easily.

Your Posts

Always post of carousel of images. This gives Instagram extra content (subsequent imagery) to display to viewers who did not engage with your Post during its initial display.

Your Text

Use very descriptive text to describe your Posts. Imagine that you are describing your images to a friend over the phone!
