CREATIVE STATEMENT
My passion for storytelling through illustration began at the age of seven, when I wrote and illustrated my first children’s book about a young monster on a journey to find his fortune. Over the years, my expertise in creating whimsical, slightly spooky art has grown through a career spanning more than 20 years in fine arts and big tech, eventually leading me to launch my own creative business. As an illustrator and muralist, I draw inspiration from my experiences as a first-generation American and neurodivergent artist, along with my time living in Thailand, India, and Central America. What I love most about illustrating misfit monsters is the way it fosters empathy, connection, and a sense of belonging for those who feel misunderstood. To create a successful, slightly spooky children’s illustration, I believe it’s essential to infuse each character with humor and humanity, inviting viewers into a world where monsters reflect parts of ourselves. To keep my skills sharp, I continually find inspiration in the wonderfully weird city of Portland, as well as from my own two little wild humans.

Q&A
What was your favorite storybook as a child?
I loved everything by Maurice Sendak. Where The Wild Things Are was a particular favorite. As a child with ADHD, I related to Max’s need to be loud, gnash his teeth, and get into a bit of mischief.
Which authors do you admire most?
Ian Falconer had a gift for balancing humor and true childhood experiences. Andrea Beaty’s Aaron Slater, Illustrator gets me in the gut every time.
What characteristics really bring a children’s book to life?
An authentic voice is so important. As a mom I know children aren’t saccharine, they are weird, silly, and more than a little gross. I also love books with hidden details to find within the illustration, like a cat the pops up on every page or small motifs that reflect the main character's emotions.
