CREATIVE STATEMENT

I have illustrated more than ten picture books for independent authors and am currently represented by Wendy Lynn & Co in the US traditional publishing space. My illustrations are hand drawn using acrylic gouache, pencils and/or crayons in a vibrant painterly style. My goal is to create a sense of warmth and authenticity in my work by keeping the art loose and fresh and full of life. I love developing expressive animal or human characters that kids can relate to, and I try to add a splash of humor where I can, to keep them engaged. With a background in graphic design, I also do book layout and design and can deliver print ready files of your story with everything in place; or I am equally happy to follow and art director's lead.

Q&A

What was your favorite storybook as a child?
I remember enjoying What a Mess when I was young. Probably because I could relate to being messy! When I got a little older I loved The Secret Garden and still do.

Which authors do you admire most?
Jon Agee (illustrator and author) is one of my favorites—his sense of humor is right up my alley.

What characteristic really brings a children’s book to life?
When the art doesn't just show exactly what is said in the text, but rather shows you something more like the moment before or the moment after what is said in the text. It leaves parts of the story to the child's imagination to fill in the blanks.
