CREATIVE STATEMENT

My interest in illustration began as a kid when I filled margins of notebooks and every spare space with doodles. Along the way I went to business school, and picked up a Bachelor of Science, all which inform my editorial work. I nurture this focus by compulsively learning about anything and everything—home repair, interior design, astronomy, you name it. What I love most about illustration is its ability to bring joy and levity to it's viewer. To create a successful illustration I believe its important to balance personal interest with what is interesting to the client. For me, the two most important qualities of a successful editorial illustration are colour and form—let the article do the talking. To maintain my skillset I keep exploring what matters to me, and trust that process takes artwork to unexpected and more practiced places.

Q&A

Which publication does a great job at using illustrations?
The nature of publications that use illustration means they innately have an eye toward quality and design, and personally I like the work of Michael Mrak for Scientific American, and Québec Science with the new inclusion of Danielle Sayer as art director.

What topic do you most enjoy illustrating about?
Science, business, healthcare, and animals, for sure.

What magazine cover do you want your illustration to be on?
It’s a tie between Sierra and Canadian Geographic—now I just have to convince them to use illustration on their cover.
