CREATIVE STATEMENT

My interest in illustration began when I was a little girl and I would get bored in restaurants and would start drawing on the back of the paper mats. Drawing strange characters or myself with blue hair was my highlight of a family dinner. Over the years, my expertise in children's books illustration has developed due to the trust that authors give me in creating a world full of colors, shapes, and light. Giving life to an idea and imagination— imagining what others imagine—is like reading minds! As an illustrator who specializes in children's books, I nurture this focus by thinking outside the box, being different, being daring, and knowing the rules so I can break them.

Q&A

What was your favorite storybook as a child? Cinderella, I remember going to my school library and get all the version of Cinderella, to the point that the librarian already had them ready for me to pickup! I didn’t understand why, but I loved how the story was the same, but the illustration style would change depending on the artist.

Which authors do you admire most?
Tomi Ungerer, Maurice Sendak, Anoosha Syed, Isabel Allende.

What characteristic really brings a children’s book to life?
Color—I LOVE COLORFUL COLORS—textures, big eyes, the responsibility of showing a feeling just with one drawing.
