CREATIVE STATEMENT

I began illustrating flowers as soon as I could pick up a paintbrush and spent my childhood in beautiful rural Somerset surrounded by colourful flowers and nature, I became obsessed with painting everything that grew wild around me. I later went on to complete a foundation in art and then a first class Hons BA in Fashion Design at the London College of Fashion, UAL. I went on to work for over 17 years designing in house for many well known international fashion brands. I founded Charlotte Hogg Studio in 2018 and specialise in illustration, decorative art and pattern design, creating floral artworks for textiles, greeting cards, homeware, stationary and packaging. I work both by hand and digitally but I always strive for as much hand painted traditional techniques in my work as possible. I am inspired by gardens, historical houses and the decorative patterns within them, folkloric design and antique botanical reference books. My studio is based in Somerset where I live on a nature filled old farm with my husband and young family.

Q&A

Which flower do you draw the most?
I love to draw wild flowers such as herb robes, cow parsley, poppies and buttercups as well anything I can gather from my wild cut flower garden! My absolute favourite flowers to draw are panises and primulas.

What grows in your garden?
Anything and everything I can manage to grow with the wild weather we have on top of the mendip hills in Somerset! In the spring we enjoy huge display of hellebores and snowdrops, summer my garden is filled to the brim with wild flowers, sweet peas, ammi and foxgloves and autumn is cosmos and asters and of course as many vegetables that survive the caterpillars!

What do flowers symbolize to you?
I am fascinated by the meaning of flowers and the floral zodiac which I have recently illustrated. Mine would be Gemini and lily of the valley which symbolises optimism, humility and curiosity!
