CREATIVE STATEMENT

My love of art began around age nine. I was selected to attend a young authors’ conference to share my story, but it was the guest illustrator who captured my attention. I majored in illustration in art school, afterwards my priority was to learn publishing. My first illustrator job was with a small children’s book publisher, where I worked hands-on with licensed products from concept to print. I’ve been freelancing for 24 years now, and my expertise in children’s educational publishing has grown thanks to the many wonderful clients I’ve had the pleasure of working with. What I love most about illustrating is creating characters that match the style of my client’s vision.

Q&A

What was your favorite storybook as a child?
The one I remember the most is Richard Scarry’s Busy, Busy World. There was just so much to look at.

Which authors do you admire most?
The one and only Judy Blume. When it comes to author/illustrator, Maurice Sendak and recently I’m admiring Lucy Fleming.

What characteristic really brings a children’s book to life?
I like books to have an element of magic. When something unusual is made to look ordinary. The best picture books use strong color, different light sources and unique perspectives. These are the books you want to open again and again.
