CREATIVE STATEMENT
My interest in maps began at school and I eventually studied geography, mapping and cartography to MSc level. As an illustrator who specializes in mapping, I nurture this focus by always looking for new and creative ways to design a map. What I love most about illustrating maps is the way each project opens my mind to new places. I also love the idea that people will not only enjoy looking at my maps but they will also use them with purpose. To create a successful map illustration, I believe it’s important to put yourself in the place of your audience and the end user of the map. A map needs to not only look nice, but in most cases, it needs to give you relevant and easy to understand information. For me, the two most important qualities of a successful map illustration are usability and visual appeal.
