CREATIVE STATEMENT
My interest in map illustration began as a geography student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where I became interested in making maps that told place-based stories using hand drawn elements and joyful color schemes. Over the years, my expertise in map illustration has developed due to my participation in THEY DRAW, and in creating detailed maps under quick timelines for The Wall Street Journal. To create a successful map illustration, I believe it’s important to research what makes a place unique (I start by looking at the history, the architecture, and the colors that dominate the landscape, for example) and weave those elements together to create a very soulful, engaging map that appeals to locals and travelers alike. To maintain my skillset, I enjoy studying illustrated maps in books and print, and creating maps of my favorite neighborhoods.
