CREATIVE STATEMENT

For me, the two most important qualities of a successful Children’s book illustration are details and lovable characters! Having special details is so important because it makes a reader go back time and time again. Details bring the world to life and while text in a children’s book is oftentimes short and simple, the illustration can be plentiful, adding much more to the experience and message. Having lovable characters is so important to really fall in love with a book—if the reader can create their own “voice” for the character, it usually leads to it becoming a favorite!

Q&A

What was your favorite storybook as a child?
A truly impossible question! There are books that hold special memories from reading over and over with my parents – If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, The Monster at the End Of This Book, Hungry Caterpillar, Strega Nona, to name a few…

Which authors do you admire most?
Roald Dahl is a favorite (specifically Matilda and BFG), but the artwork by Quentin Blake is what really captured me and brought those stories to life. Eric Carle is a timeless inspiration as well.

What characteristics really bring a children’s book to life?
Lovable, memorable character(s) that feel REAL to a child! Scenes with alot of detail that they can sit and look at again and again.
